Let's flashback a few weeks...November 9, 2010 to be exact.
As I was enjoying my morning cup of coffee in Winslow, Arizona, I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of the chosen ones who live there full time. I mean seriously, From what I saw and experienced in the off-season, it is still a great town!
So, Brian and I discussed my travels as well as some of his own, Route 66, motorcycles in general and the best route to get from Winslow to Albuquerque without getting on the Interstate. This would involve heading south on 99 until I came to a dirt road on the left, marked "McLaws".
OK, lets fast forward to a couple of weeks ago...
I see an email from a guy named Brian about some pictures of a Guzzi rider enjoying coffee in Winslow. Sure as heck, there I was sitting inside Seattle's Best talking with Nadine. Mozi is parked outside and life is good.
Nadine was a hoot. A wealth of information and usable advice. I could have stayed there all day talking to her, but as much as I dislike these decisive moments of this journey, I had to get on the road, even if it were a dirt road which led to an honest-to-goodness paved road and back onto another dirt road which would mysteriously end in the middle of nowhere. For a moment, I shut Mozi down and placed the kickstand on the brim of my Freedom, Maine hat which I carefully placed on the root ball of a sagebrush. "Good Mozi, be still. Don't move...I will be right back." After digging my lineman's pliers out of my saddlebag, I proceeded to remove the makeshift gate of barbed wire at the end of this "Dirt Highway" because I could see vehicles driving over a hill a few miles ahead. Slipping across a desert wasteland would take me away from I-40 and cause me to totally miss the Petrified Forest.
According to Google Maps, the driving time from Winslow to Albuquerque is 4 hours and 6 minutes.
Mozi and I rode hard for just under 12 hours to make this segment of our travels as true to my rule #2 could be; Stay off of the interstate system!
Remember the email I mentioned above? Brian sent me a link to his website and I want to share this with you. I know...pictures never do a subject proper justice. However, Brian has honored me with these photographic memories. http://www.winslowmotorpalace.com/Winslow_Motor_Palace/Photos.html
Mozi on...
I have embarked on a solo cross-country trip on a vintage motorcycle "Mozi" to research, discuss and discover what Americans think and believe about Freedom. Follow me as I travel through the 48 connected states to meet and talk with average Americans about our freedom as a nation as well as individual Freedom. Email me with places of interest which has everything to do with Freedom: solofreedomride@gmail.com
