Nicollet, Minnesota and Football

I saw the signs and it read like a moment in time when Burma Shave was the choice of roadside reading.

Not today. Football in a town with a population of 889 is huge!

I will go back and post pictures of each sign as I read them just to share with you and to pay tribute to the Boys of Fall.
Great story to follow a little later about a high school football game between rivals that are located north and south of Freedom Township, Minnesota yesterday.

Oh, I might as well tell it now. As I was setting up my camera and tripod in front of the Lutheran Church in Freedom, I saw a van stopped on the roadway about a half mile north of me. Someone got out of the van and ran to the opposite side of the road and someone who was on that side of the road ran over and got in the van as it drove towards me. I was a bit puzzles when this happened over and over about every 5 minutes.

As the van and running man became closer to me I watched with intense disbelief of what was happening. The running man was a youth carrying a football and when the van left him he continued towards me, proudly holding the football under his arm as if he was running for the end zone. The van stopped a few hundred feet ahead of him and another member of the high school football team exited the van to cross the empty road to receive a forward pass and relieve the current runner. The entire team was in the van and took their turn to carry the ball a little closer to it's destination, the rival school's football field where there would be a challenge on Friday night between the sons of farmers and businessmen from two towns a few miles apart. I seriously wanted to stay another two days just to witness the game, the hot cocoa and a celebration that will be the talk of these towns for weeks, if not months, to come. Would there be a school record score set? I may never know.
