I was happy to finally reach this milestone on my journey west, but was a little sad to miss the beauty of this grand river without the light of day reflecting off of it's surface as it passes through the lock and dam of Dresbach. I pulled off of route 61 to rest Mozi for a while in the parking lot of the dam overlook to take in the cool night air and a sky filled with stars. Not a cloud in the sky, only a yellow moon in the east.
Two men were fishing on the bank and within a few minutes, we were sharing stories (fish tales) and I was told of the local flooding due to a breakage in a dam upstream.
Anyway, I am sitting across the street from Gatherings and Gifts, a local coffee shoppe where a very important group gathers to discuss everything, including some guy who rode his motorcycle into town on his quest for Freedom in America and doesn't know a thing about the game of Cribbage! They tried to teach me, but it was early in the morning, I was still on my first cup of java and all was not right with the world. That was soon to change.
Like most stops along my path, I have met a wide variety of interesting people who love to laugh and enjoy life.
Conversation is made with ease in such friendly settings as this curved counter filled with folks who are not pretentious, not wealthy and not poor at all. Riches found within the 1891 walls of the old Smith Building are from the heart.
Cribbage? I was being coached by a pro on my left, but my partner was two stools away and George sat between us. 15-2, 15-4, 7/7-6 and a run gave me 9... What does this all mean? It means I am not on the road, because of my Freedom to sit a while a chew the fat!
As I look at Mozi over my shoulder, I know it is time. Time to head west and discover what I am seeking. I promised myself I would spend a few minutes riding around town, before attacking Route 14 west off of Whitewater Road, which by the way, is covered with grooves because of a fall repaving project that is the buzz of locals and "That Guy" (as Rosie put it) from Massachusetts on two wheels.
Mozi on...
