Earlier today, I took Mozi to a real, honest-to-goodness motorcycle mechanic to have a leaking head gasket replaced. Yes, I was tired of the oil-soaked left boot.
Anyway, he removed the left cylinder head to discover that the cylinder lining was coming apart. This type of problem is not repairable and can only be remedied by replacement. Ebay is loaded with used cylinders for 1970 Moto Guzzi 750 Ambassadors. I could venture there, with the chance of buying another pair of air-cooled, 40 year old aluminum castings with similar features hidden within the chrome plating of the sleeves.
Or, I would spend a couple of thousand dollars, that I do not have to spare at this moment, for a pair of re-manufactured cylinders, complete with German-made pistons which are within .25 gram of identical weight, wearing a new set of rings and... a pair of restored cylinder heads, new valves, guides, exhaust threads and gaskets.
I have 6 days to sort this all out, make the best decision on which way to go and act upon this decision in a timely fashion to assure I can still make my departure date of August 31, 2010. We are talking Tuesday of next week. Today is Wednesday...
Mozi on (or not?)...
I have embarked on a solo cross-country trip on a vintage motorcycle "Mozi" to research, discuss and discover what Americans think and believe about Freedom. Follow me as I travel through the 48 connected states to meet and talk with average Americans about our freedom as a nation as well as individual Freedom.
