Frigid Thought

It is Friday morning and bitter cold temperatures are compounded by 25 MPH winds in southern New England. I forgot my gloves as I dropped of my van at the remote parking lot on Martha's Vineyard Island. The lot is a convenient spot to leave your vehicle and boarding the free shuttle bus to the ferry terminal if one is going to venture off island to America. On the return trip from the ferry port in Woods Hole, Ma. I am reminded of how cold my Ford Econoline van will be when I depart the shuttle bus.

Why should I suffer? Just because I have not been blessed with an automatic car starter there must be another way to drive away in a toasty van.

As the shuttle bus drives down the endless row of frozen vehicles, I can see my van. The driver stops the van near the middle of the lot, which just happens to be where I stratigically parked my van the night before in anticipation of a convenient departure in the morning. Ah, I am standing ahead of everyone else in the bus, which allows me the time needed to jump out, crank my van, lock the door with the engine running and the heater turned to it's highest setting, and board the shuttle for a free round trip in a heated space with a scenic view of frozen folks in the wonderful town of Vineyard Haven, also known as Tisbury, MA. The shuttle makes a round trip every 15 minutes and that will surely be enough time for the combustion engine to combust, the antifreeze to thaw and the heater to heat my Naugahide seatcover to a pleasant temperature of, say, around 50. My butt will accelerate the global warming of this same fabric in record time, once I am settled down and buckled in for the 10 mile ride to work.

Enjoy your day and stay warm!
